At seed stage your scarcest resource is engineering attention, and auth is a solved problem with a long tail of security edge cases — session fixation, token rotation, SSO, SCIM, breach response. Build your own only if authentication is the product, or if a compliance regime genuinely forbids third-party identity storage. Rough cost: a provider runs $0–500/month until real scale. Rolling your own costs one engineer roughly six weeks up front, then a permanent maintenance tax.

The one case for building: if you need something genuinely unusual — device-bound keys, offline-first, an unusual multi-tenancy shape — the provider abstraction will fight you more than a small custom implementation would.
